Last weekend we had the opportunity to organise one of the biggest snowkiting and winging team events in Estonia including more than 20 participants.
Estonians are huge fans of corporate team events, but usually more traditional activities are chosen. For example, artwork, yoga, SUP, ceramics or similar. Our excitement was huge when Anne-Mai landed our biggest team event ever – snowkiting and winging afternoon for Magnum.
It was clear from the beginning that we needed some external help to execute the event, because we don’t have enough equipment nor experience. We acknowledge that when it comes to organising huge team events, then we’re still rookies, especially in people management in the given timeframe.
Luckily we have a good partner Jane at Surfy who always shares our enthusiasm and hops onboard. It soon turned out that it’s not that easy to gather together around 10 wings in Tallinn. It’s still quite a new discipline and surf schools have only a few.
The sign up for the event was the biggest surprise. Magnum’s people started enrolling for the event very quickly. The interest was huge and we set a participation limit – max 25 people. Usually people sign up and a few drop off before the event, but this time none. Everyone came! Believe it was also thanks to the weather – superb sunny and windy winter weather. Being on Lake Harku was an absolute delight.
Based on the number of participants we divided people in two big groups. Firstly, one group tried kiting and the other winging and then swopped. Must admit that winging on snow is a wonderful team event theme as it’s super easy to get people moving. Kiting, however, needs more time and practice and such team events work rather as introductory events for those who’re not sure whether to try it or not.
The day as such was a challenge for sure. The most challenging part was handling so many people who all have their personal needs, expectations and needs for instructions (some want more explanation, some want us to step aside and learn from their own mistakes – hehe). We were very ambitious to fit in the given time frame, but everyone got a chance to try both disciplines.
The participants were very content and satisfied. It was brought out that it was one of the coolest team events ever. Of course, we’re proud and take in all the good feedback. People’s positivity and energy is what keeps us going.
