Our TOP 5 spots in Estonia

Even though we absolutely LOVE white sandy beaches and turquoise water, then Estonia is a WONDERFUL place for practicing kitesurfing. We have a wide coastline, shallow waters and plenty of spots nearby.

But what are the spots we like the most in Estonia and why?

1. LAULASMAA

Laulasmaa is our so-called home spot where we properly learnt to kitesurf. It is the place where our journey kiting together started. The spot has a really strong sentimental value to us.

It’s located in Northern Estonia, close to the capital Tallinn.
Three key features why we love the spot:

  •  It’s a bit away from our homes, so it’s like a small roadtrip – a 20-30 minute drive where we can chat and set ourselves in the right mood for the session. Our quality time together.
  • Location is picture perfect – a super wide beach, white soft sand (considering Estonian sand it’s as white as the sand can be here), a short walk through the forest and rushes.
  • Lots of space – the spot has room for everyone, whether you are a beginner or advanced kiter. So you can go and find yourself even a deserted corner to practice something new without worrying that you’ll end up crashing into someone or you won’t have even a chance to try something new because the traffic is so intense.
You can also find some mild waves and a flat lagoon.

2. KOOVI

Koovi is situated in the biggest island Saaremaa. We actually discovered it quite recently, only a few years back, but it’s one of the coolest places we have kited. And again – we just love islands. What could be better than being surrounded by the water from every direction.

Three key features why we love the spot:

  • Super shallow and flat water – Koovi attracts kiters with it’s shallow flat water. Depending on the sea level, most of the spot has knee high flat water. In some parts close to the reed, it also gets quite deep, so keep away from there. Otherwise, what else one kiter would desire? Even with super strong winds it remains flat, therefore superb place for big air riders. Most of the highest jumps in Estonia are jumped there.
  • Deserted – it’s not a spot you accidentally end up in. It’s quite a trip away so you need to have intention and concrete purpose to go there. This, however, means that you can have days when you’re the only kiter there.
  • Location is picture perfect – seems we love being in the nature and value highly spots that have picture perfect views. Koovi is definitely one of them.

3. SÕRVE

Sõrve peninsula is also located on the biggest island Saaremaa. The kiting spot is at the top of the peninsula. It’s a nature reserve area, so please be aware of the restrictions – there are certain times in a year when the birds are nesting and kiting is forbidden.

Three key features why we love the spot:

  • Flat water – west side of the peninsula has super flat water even with strong winds.  However, it gets deep very quickly, so please be careful if you’re a beginner.
  • Very windy – if the rest of the island Saaremaa has no wind, then the biggest opportunity to find some is always in Sõrve.
  • Nice cafe for aftersurf – a very lovely small cafe for aftersurf. Serves entrees, soups, mains and desserts. Not to mention drinks, of course.

4. PRESIDENT’s FLAT

President’s flat is located on the mainland at the Viimsi peninsula. The kiting spot is again at the top of the peninsula, just a 45 min drive from the city center. Little bit tricky to access due to the reason that it is closed by local residents – exclusive land for housing. The access is by foot via seafront or by kiting from Rohuneeme beach over the peninsula. The right place is between the island Kräsuli and mainland. Possible to ride also between island Kräsuli and Kumbli.

Three key features why we love the spot:

  • Flat water – west side of the peninsula has super flat water even with strong winds. Approximately waist high water but it can be bit deeper with higher sea level. Almost indescribable between island Kräsuli and Kumbli – super clear, shallow and flat.
  • No traffic – it is not very popular place amongst kiters, due to the reason that the spot is rideable only with offshore winds. If you are a beginner for sure recommend to gain some riding skill before heading there. Otherwise remote, beautiful and overall neat experience to ride there. Surely different…
  • You can have a cool downwinder back to your car – if you park your car on the westside of the peninsula, it is possible to end your session with cool downwind ride. Just before where the residential area starts, there is some open area left at the seaside where you can end your session, land your kite and pack down everything.

5. KÕINASTU

Kõinastu is quite an undiscovered spot on the island of Muhu. The journey to the spot is an experience itself as you pass by many meadows and grass chewing cows.
Launching and landing might be tricky for beginners, so be careful.

Three key features why we love the spot:

  • Shallow flat water – the water between the many islets is shallow, warm and flat. Perfect for practicing new tricks.
  • In the middle of nowehere – the spot is basically in the middle of nowhere, only endless meadowns, cows and junipers. And as you might already know, we just love deserted places in the nature.
  • Lots of space – it might easily happen that the entire beach is completely to yourself. But there’s also lots of space when other kiters around – everyone can find his/her spot to kite and train.
