One of our favourite home spots is Laulasmaa, where we have kited since the beginning. Laulasmaa in direct translation means “singing ground”. Allegedly it got it’s name because of the sand, which starts singing with certain winds.
Location: Laulasmaa is located in northern Estonia, ca 30 km from Tallinn city boarder. The beach is accessible from Kloogranna tee and with few minutes walk through pine forest and beach meadow, you will be greeted by white “singing” sands. Best way to get there is by car but you can also take a local bus no 237. Then, however, you still need to walk ca 1km from Laulasmaa village center to the right place. Due to its distance from the capital it isn’t so crowded as i.e. Kakumägi or Stroomi in the heart of the city, therefore lots of room for everybody!
Wind: Laulasmaa is the spot to be with west winds. All the other directions start coming over land, therefore the wind gets really gusty.
Water: As Laulasmaa is Northen waterfront, the temperature of the water stays between 15 to 22 degrees during summer (high season). Early in the spring it is much lower around 5-10 degrees and in autumn the same. It is good to remember that west winds usually bring warmer water and east winds usually blow it away, therefore after a couple of east wind days the temperature is far lower than usually. The water is shallow as in most of Estonian beaches. The offshore slope is nice and sandy. On the west side of the beach with strong winds you are able to pick up some choppy waves that can be considered rather small. In Estonia we have only few special beaches for wave surfing – they can be counted on two hands’ fingers! Still on those choppy waves you’re able to get some really nice kicks!
Shore: Is quite narrow, but very long and sandy. Therefore plenty of room to set up your gear. Also you might find few brier bushes a bit further away from the waterfront. Otherwise really neat and good.
Hazards: Brier bushes on the shore; few stones in the sea on the east side of the beach; shallow areas in the sea (the depth of the water is inconsistent).
Kiting levels: suitable for beginner, intermediate, advanced kiters. Very good for beginners as the water is shallow and waterfront wide.
Beach rules: Laulasmaa is official surf and leisure beach, so before heading to the water make sure you know the surfing areas. They have informative map put up, where all the areas have been brought out. Check it out!
Accommodation/food: There are a few options for a bite nearby in Laulasmaa village we recommend – a small cafe Ott & Matilda and Restaurant Wicca. There’s also a nice SPA hotel for a nightover or aftersurf relaxation – the Hestia Hotel Laulasmaa SPA. The hotel is located right on the beach and has a really nice indoor swimming area.
Other relevant information: Laulasmaa has its own surfclub. So if you would like to rent a gear or take some lessons, it is all possible through them.
