WAFI! WAFI! Please go away!

Every once in a while we receive a question about our name. What is WAFI short for and how did we come up with it?

In short the name comes from a years back time, when some of our friends  decided it was about time to learn sailing and you can say that WAFI presented itself to them.

So here take a nice cup of tea and let us tell you a story about how WAFI was born…

Once upon a time, when the sea was darker, the sun shone warmer and the wind blew more vigorously, five men decided it is a right time to learn sailing. Like in many other coastal men, in these five men veins’ rushed a river of love towards the great seas and unidentified beaches.

While these men were pupils under the command of a captain in the Finnish Gulf, there once occurred a situation where they sailed in front of a large vessel with two enormous funnels. There were rumors moving around that the same vessel was carrying valuables from far West and bringing wealth to their people. Getting too close to the vessel, the giant gave two dreadfully long whistles from its mast and called out in foreign language: “WAFI … WAFI… Please go away!” Glancing over this enormous western vessel and being terrified by the situation, the captain quickly ordered change in course, so that the great and long-awaited guests would still be able to dock at their harbor.

Upon arrival in the harbor and after some digging in ancient sailing books, they found out that the word “WAFI” was an abbreviation of a phrase  – Wind Assisted Fucking Idiot. In another words wind powered sailing boat. They didn’t mind the outrageous wrath of the foreign guest, because they also were learning to navigate in these waters for the very first time. Since then the crew was called – WAFI.

So there you have it, the story about WAFI and what it stands for! 🙂 Today WAFI team unites a large group of friends who all are a bit of sports fanatics. We are actively engaged in sailing, rally, tennis, rogain, running,  surf and many other activities! We constantly challenge ourselves and look for good emotions from doing things together. Once a WAFI, always a WAFI!
