It’s in our nature to say YES to all proposals that seem exiting, fun and benefit our learning curve. We constantly feel the need to develop our skills, therefore no wonder we said YES to learning how to wing surf.
Jane Aluve from Surfy invited us to learn how to wing. We had zero experience with wing before, but had thought about trying for a few times. Therefore, the offer was a perfect match.
One weekend we were on a snowy field ready to try. As we master kitesurfing quite well, then learning how to handle the wing was super easy. I think it took us max 15 minutes to learn the basics: how to hold the wing, what happens when you change the position of the hands on handles, how to turn, and there you go – READY!
In the beginning the wind was quite modest, therefore we had loads of fun trying to move, but the progress was cm by cm. Fortunately, the wind picked up and we actually could get our first stripes. It was more fun we expected!
A few weeks later we also tried wining on skates. There were exceptional conditions on Lake Harku to wing on ice-skates. Oh boy, how fast you could develop your speed on skates. Even more fun than expected. And no crashes either, though we were prepared for them.
What are the most important takeaways:
- Handling the wing is super easy – far easier than the kite.
- Snow winging is probably the easiest way how to start your surfing path – for a total beginner it takes max 30 minutes to get the first stripes. You don’t need to be experienced skier or snowboarder.
- As you’re on the ground, then you can stop any time, take a break, and chat a bit with your bestie. This is definitely a win for us.
- You can develop the speed on ice-skates – if you’re chasing adrenaline, then definitely should try it.
Let’s see where the winging journey takes us next….
