July marks only one thing in our calendars – it’s time for our annual surf camp in Hiiumaa. This year was no different.
We usually start prepping for the camp already in January, when booking accommodation. There’s only one place in Hiiumaa where we absolutely LOVE to stay and it’s Kalana Holiday Village. And if you don’t book your stay in the beginning of the year, then forget about it.
But the real excitement comes a week or two before the trip itself…..when checking the forecast. And oh boy…this year’s forecast was very PROMISING. Honestly, cannot remember when was the last time we had such an optimistic forecast. And luckily, the wind delivered 🙂 It was windy 5 days in a row. So good even that we could choose when to surf and when not.
It was also the first time we surfed in a spot called Paope. We had heard about it, but never visited it, because the wind always blew from another direction. But this time, full Paope vibes.
Practicing one-footers in a choppy and seaweedish spot
Paope is a surf spot on the northern coast of Hiiumaa and suitable for NW winds. It’s very choppy, so not our favourite spot in Hiiumaa, but still ridable. Maybe we’re just extremely picky and don’t like choppy sea. Also, there was a lot of seaweed, so the greatest challenge was to find some space without it to practice our one-footers that often ended with mild crashes 😛 Luckily not in the seaweed “soup”.
However, the beach was entirely for ourselves. A few friends came along to surf there, but still very much space. As we had all the kiddos along, then empty beaches are our favourites. Less need to check what they’re up to because there’s less chance of them getting on the way of other kiters. Win-win for everybody.
At the end we spent 3 days kiting in a row and then our muscles failed. Felt physically that we need a break. Maybe here’s a note t ourselves that we should get in a better shape? 💪
The rest of the kite camp was the as usual. Some sightseeing with kiddos (even though they have visited all the places, we do it again and again on their request), some drinks and party. A perfect summer getaway.
What was EXTRA COOL about it this year was we accidentally pumped into our kiter friends and it appears that next time we might have already a bigger group to go with. He-he!
Here’s our little recap reel….
